Mumbai(formerly Bombay), situated on the western coast of India, is the city of glamour and megastars, of industrialists and business houses, of a futuristic lifestyle and an amalgamation of the West with the traditional Maharashtrian culture. Apart from being the the financial capital of India, it is also the capital of India's most progressive states, Maharashtra. Gateway of India

Situated on the Apollo Bunder, the ceremonial arch was built in 1927 Delhi Durbar in 1911. It is of great historical importance for the Indians, since British troops left India by sea passing through its portals.

Elephanta Island
Nine kilometers by sea from the Gateway of India, is situated the Elephanta Island famous for its scenic beauty. A holiday in Mumbai is never complete without a visit to this incredible place. Also known as Gharapuri, the island is home to the mystifying rock-cut temples, which date back to the 7th century. The chief attraction is the three-busted head of Lord Shiva, providing an excellent example of the craftsmanship in rock-cut structures. The Elephanta caves are an example of Hindu architecture at its best. Regular ferry tours to the Elephanta Caves are available from th Gateway of India.

Prince of Wales Museum
This famous structure was built in honor of King George's visit to India. It has three main sections-Art, Archeology and Natural History. A vast collection of Chinese Jade pieces, Victorian oil paintings and weaponry of the Mughal era, are the added attractions of the museum.

JijaMata Udyan - Zoo (Rani Baug)
Situated at Byculla on the central side of Mumbai, the zoo originally known as Victoria Gardens, houses many endangers species of birds and animals.

Nehru Science Centre
The highlight of this is the son et lumiene show. The Center also has an attractive Children's section and exhibits like the railway engine and the tramcar.

Nehru Planetarium
This planetarium is situated in Worli and is also a concert cum movie auditorium. It is the only place that recreates the image of the sky as seen from anywhere on earth anytime.

Haji Ali
The tomb of the ancient saint, Haji Ali, is located opposite the Mahalaxmi racecourse. During high tide, the connecting causeway is submerged in water giving the impression of the mosque and tomb floating out in the sea.

Iskcon
Popularly known as Hare Rama Hare Krishna temple, it is situated in Juhu and is a popular place for worship, meditation and spiritual knowledge.

Mount Mary Church
It is one of the prominent churches in Mumbai. A week long fair, which is popularly known as Bandra fair, is held in the month of September to celebrate the birth of Mother Mary on September 8. People of all faiths throng this place to seek the blessings of the Mother.

Sanjay Gandhi National Park
Situated off the Western Express Highway near Borivali, the park is famous for the Kanheri Caves carved by the Buddhist monks in the second century A.D. Adding to the beauty are the lush greenery, wild animals and the mini train.

The Beaches
Mumbai is famous for its beaches the most prominent being the Chowpatty beach, the venue for the Annual Ganesh Chaturthi Festival. Juhu Beach, located in the suburbs is very similar to Chowpatty. Gorai and Marve beaches, which are in the northern suburbs, are quieter and a better proposition for tourists looking for a quiet evening.

Hanging Gardens
Situated on the Malabar Hills on the Western side of the city, the gardens have a panoramic view of the city. They were built in 1952, and have the "Old Woman's Shoe" and a Musical Fountain.

Marine Drive
Also known as the "Queen's Necklace", Marine Drive is a major attraction for tourists on holiday in Mumbai. This curved boulevard glittering with streetlights resembles a glowing pearl string.
